Lowering Energy Bills. Building Community Leaders

The Center for Energy Policy and Management at Washington & Jefferson College will undertake a project to address energy inefficiency in area households while fostering youth leadership and environmental stewardship.

Thanks to generous financial support from the West Penn Energy Fund, the Center will assemble energy efficiency care packages containing items such as LED light bulbs and weatherization materials. Middle school students participating in the Upper St. Clair School District leadership academy will assist in assembling the kits and receive education about the importance of sustainability and community service.

The center will also collaborate with LeMoyne Community Center in Washington, which serves local families, to deliver workshops to summer camp students, teaching them about energy efficiency, sustainability, and the resources included in the kits. These sessions will give students are greater understanding about reducing energy costs, which they can share with their families and use to advocate for sustainable practices in their communities.

The center’s staff will distribute energy care packages to local families at food distribution events held at the LeMoyne Center. When installed, these materials can save families up to 20 percent on their energy bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. That can be particularly important to families who may struggle to meet basic household needs.

The program is now in its fourth year, and to date has provided about 800 families with materials to improve their home’s comfort and save money on their utility bills, while also fostering knowledge of the importance of energy efficiency and sustainability in young people.

“We’re delighted to partner with West Penn Energy Fund on this important initiative. With their support, we’re able to provide meaningful experiences for students in two school districts and help local families reduce their energy consumption and save money on their energy bills,” said Dr. Corey Young, Director of the Center for Energy Policy and Management.

The Center plans to work with the students over the summer to assemble the kits and provide energy efficiency education. The bags will be distributed in the Washington area at food distribution events.

“Energy efficiency is an investment that delivers immediate results. This program helps families lower their costs today while giving students real experience in serving their community; that’s the kind of measurable impact WPEF is proud to support.” says Joel Morrison, West Penn Energy Fund Administrator.
